Why Dakka and INAT FAQs stink

An example:

INAT FAQ 3.0:

+SM.71A.01 – Q: Can a Techmarine embarked on a
vehicle attempt to fix it without getting out?
A: No he cannot [clarification].
Ref: BA.06C.01, IG.34A.02

INAT FAQ 3.2:

+SM.71A.01 – Q: Can a Space Marine Techmarine who started the turn embarked on a vehicle attempt to repair it?
A: Yes he can [clarification].
Ref: BT.36C.02, BA.06C.01, IG.34A.02, DA.31A.02

None of the codices in question changed between these FAQs. It's just a rules change written less clearly.

40K Variant games

Two variants of campaign games, with simplified rules and scoring:

The previous tournament used the three missions for the book. Here's a simplified version of one we've been using in the campaign. This might promote a more active use of a take-all-comers list.

Acquisition (3x5)

Setup:

  • Place one objective marker in the middle of the board.

Old Time Religion: Lamenters Chaplain

A power-armored Chaplain for the Lamenters Space Marines.

I tried some new techniques for the gold -- a basecoat of Tin Bitz, black wash, Shining Gold highlights, sepia wash, and a a gloss coat on top.

Painting Quality Explained

My opinion of painting quality:

First, we have unprimed. That's the state of the miniature out of the box -- either bare metal or plastic. To construct it properly, it should be assembled without noticeable glue puddles or marks, superglue fingerprints, and have flash and mold lines removed. This may be time consuming for some of Games Workshop's cheaper and more available miniatures, like the Space Marines from the Assault on Black Reach starter set.

Most problems of an unprimed miniature can be fixed quickly.

A Red Marine!

I decided to try a test miniature of another Blood Angels successor chapter, the Blood Drinkers.

These guys are red with yellow trim.

First, the start: Army Painter Colour Primer on one of my AOBR Marines.

WIP: Lamenters Razorback 2

The Cor Semper Fidele after washes, drybrushes, and weathering powder.

Front of the "Always-Faithful Heart"

New techniques:

  • Sponged on Charadon Granite, which works great for paint chips and general damage.
  • Forgeworld Black Soot weathering powder around the exhausts. Better results than a black wash.
  • Forgeworld Light Earth powder on the tracks, mixed with turpentine substitute ("white spirit"). Good for general mud.

WIP: Lamenters Razorback

In progress: the Razorback Cor Semper Fidele "Always-Faithful Heart", for the Lamenters Chapter Space Marines.

Standard basecoat: Army Painter Daemonic Yellow over a thin coat of white primer. In this state they're pretty much a Schoolbus of Death.

I've done some detail work. Masking those larger checkerboards is tedious, but produces a clean look with a little clean-up on the edges. The door is one of my custom Lamenters Chapter designs, engraved and cut on an Epilog laser machine at TechShop.

Lamenters Space Marines: Assault Marine

Lamenters Assault Marine.

Here's the test model for some Assault Marines (guys with jetpacks). I used more highlighting and tried to be careful about the areas of sepia wash over yellow.

Note: photos are about 250% enlargements (the figure is 30mm tall).

The Proper Attitude Toward Strange 40K Rule Interpretations

skeptical-cat-is-fraught-with-skepticism.jpg

Recent corrections and research at the local game shop:

  • Space Marine Command Squads are not retinues. Clarified via recent change to C:SM FAQ.
  • Assaults against a vehicle only auto-hit if the vehicle is immobilized or did not move in the previous turn. Rulebook.

Five by Five

Here's the version of Stelek's 5x5 game we've been playing.

5x5 means: 5 objectives and 5 kill points.

How it works:

  • Set up the board and place terrain as per WH 40K rules.
  • Roll to see who goes first.
  • Place one objective in the center of the board.
  • Starting with the player who goes first, each player places another objective on the board, which must be at least 6" from a table edge and 12" from any other objective.
