40K Variant games

Two variants of campaign games, with simplified rules and scoring:

The previous tournament used the three missions for the book. Here's a simplified version of one we've been using in the campaign. This might promote a more active use of a take-all-comers list.

Acquisition (3x5)

Setup:

  • Place one objective marker in the middle of the board.
  • Each player places an additional objective marker, which must be at least 12" from the board edge and 12" from any other objective. Objectives cannot be placed in impassable terrain or inside or on top of intact buildings.

After deployment, nominate five enemy units for kill points. These may be any unit, including dedicated transports. If a selected unit is split into combat squads, the opposing player will nominate one of the two combat squads instead. If a squad is combined (e.g. Guard), the entire combined squad counts as one unit, but this must be done before deployment.

Scoring:

  • Control of an objective: 10 Victory Points
  • Contesting an objective: ZERO Points
  • Per nominated unit killed: 3 Victory Points
  • All nominated units killed: +5 Victory Points

Maximum possible: 50 VP

It's important to set contestation at zero points if you're using standard 40K objective rules.

Also, with only three objectives, scores will not get too far out of whack if someone is sandbagging with a bogus concession.

For a lower VP total, 7 for objectives and 2 for kills (with no bonus) would provide a max of 31.

Assault on the Ancient Temple

Setup:

Place a large ruin in the center of the table. Place an artifact marker in the center of the ruin, on the ground floor. The large ruin is impassable to all non-walker vehicles and difficult terrain for other units. The structure offers 5+ cover to units inside.

Deployment: Players roll to see who goes first. The winner chooses a long table edge and deploys forces within 12" of that edge. The other player then deploys within 12" of the opposite edge. Reserves as normal. Scout units and infiltrators must stay at least 12" from the temple ruin during deployment.

Game Play: The first turn of the game uses the Night Fighting rules.

Scoring (30 points maximum):

The artifact is captured by the player with the most intact scoring units within 3" of the artifact marker at the end of the game. Fleeing units do not count. Non-scoring units do not count. If both sides have at least one scoring unit on the objective and are tied for the number of scoring units, they are both awarded points for contesting.

Primary objective: Capture (max 20)
Captured the artifact: 20 points
Contested the artifact (minimum of one scoring unit): 5 points

Secondary objectives: kill points (max 10)

Choose One:
Four or more kill points: 3 points
Six or more kill points: 5 points

Choose One:
More kill points than your enemy: 2 points
Twice as many or more kill points than your enemy: 5 points

It is critical that the central ruin is impassable to non-walker vehicles to prevent last minute tank runs onto a lone objective.
