Five by Five

Here's the version of Stelek's 5x5 game we've been playing.

5x5 means: 5 objectives and 5 kill points.

How it works:

  • Set up the board and place terrain as per WH 40K rules.
  • Roll to see who goes first.
  • Place one objective in the center of the board.
  • Starting with the player who goes first, each player places another objective on the board, which must be at least 6" from a table edge and 12" from any other objective.
  • Repeat the step above, so that at least five objectives are on the board.
  • Roll for deployment type as in a standard game.
  • After deployment, each player nominates five units from his opponent's army that count for kill points.
    Clarifications:
    - You may choose dedicated transports.
    - You may not choose a unit which does not exist during deployment.
    - Units held in reserve are deployed.
    - If a unit splits (example: Drop Podded Space Marine Combat Squads) as part of its entry on the board, you will choose one of the two subunits for kill points when it enters the game.

Scoring

In this variant there are 14 possible victory points.

  • One victory points per controlled objective
  • One victory point per controlled table quarter
  • One victory point per kill point

Only scoring units (troops) may control objectives or quarters. Other unit types may contest. Unlike standard 40K, the contest is resolved. Troop scoring units count as two units for this purpose. You must have at least one scoring unit to control.

Examples:

1. A Tactical Marine Squad is within 3" of objective A, as is an enemy Wraithlord.
- The Tac Squad wins 2-1, and controls the objective.

2. A Dreadnought is within 3" of objective B. No other units are nearby.
- No scoring units are nearby. The objective is not scored.

3. A Tac Squad, Dreadnought, and Predator are in table quarter 1, with an enemy Wave Serpent carrying a Dire Avengers squad.
- 2+1+1 = 4 vs. 2+1 = 3. The quarter goes to the Space Marine player.

Units may count for contesting / scoring only one quarter, even if they are straddling the edge of a table quarter. The owning player may pick which quarter they are contesting.

Kill points are scored per unit destroyed or falling back at the end of the game. Units which are falling back may still count for objective and quarter scoring.

Other variants:

- Play with objectives worth two points each for a very active game.
- Add the following victory point conditions to make victories more decisive: +2 VPs for scoring more kill points than your enemy, +2 VPs for controlling more objectives than your enemy.
